"Blue
Night"
The blues evolved at about the same time as ragtime and jazz in
America. Ragtime had spectacular popularity and then faded from
the public eye. Jazz reinvigorates itself every few years by
assimilating tendencies from other art forms. The blues takes a
fairly standard chord progress, blue notes (flatted 3rd and 7th
intervals) and bent notes (micro tonally adjusted pitches) to
create music of melancholy nature with a poignant personal
character that continues on its independent way. The Trillium
Piano Trio will present evocations of the blues by Ravel and
Gershwin, as well as compositions by W.C. Handy, Robert Johnson
and other greats of the last 100 years.

"Trillium Terrors"
Come
savor the treats as we conjure the sprites, spirits and spooks
characterized by Edvard Grieg, Ludwig van Beethoven and Camille
St. Saëns.
Eerie murmurs, sudden shudders and scary stillness capture the
Halloween spirit in music. Gnomes, ghosts and goblins get the
Trillium treatment and you may listen.

" Richard
Strauss: A Classic Romantic"
Part
of the other Strauss family musical tradition, Richard
was the son of a successful and sought after French Hornist in
Munich Germany. A childhood penchant and precocity coupled with
first-rate scholarship helped to create a master musician ready
and able to take the leadership of the Munich orchestra when
given an unexpected opportunity to conduct (his own composition)
as a teenager. His efforts in composition were classical, even
conservative, until his ground-breaking work in tone poems.
Slightly before the epochal eruptions in Stravinsky, Debussy and
Schoenberg premieres, Strauss’ music stirred the audience to
vocal enthusiasm as well as shouts of indignation. Let us know
how you feel..

"The Elegance of Fritz
Kreisler"
Fritz Kreisler showed remarkable talent and learned violin
swiftly from a very young age. He followed his age
–limit-breaking admission to the Vienna Conservatory with
winning the gold medal in violin performance at 10 years of age
after 3 years of study. Two more years of study at the Paris
Conservatory resulted in his sharing the first place prize in
violin performance with 3 other students in their 20’s.
Kreisler followed a brief American tour with a withdrawal
from violin playing. He made efforts at the study of painting
and medicine and entered the Austrian army as an officer. After
being wounded and decorated, he returned to the touring circuit
after several months of practice. He held a place of honor as a
performer for another 30 years. He was revered by musicians as
well as the public for his rich, warm playing and great spirit.
His compositions provided varied material for his early recital
programs and captured the character of this great artist.

"Dancing Fantasy"
From
ancient times there has been a fascination with dance and the
music that accompanies and inspires it. Dance has expressed the
magnificent and the mundane, the mystical and materialistic. For
some cultures it is the perfect vehicle for expressing devotion,
for other it is the spirit of individuality or kinship.
We’ll present Bach’s evocation of Renaissance dances,
Chopin’s
recollection of homeland, Tchaikovsky’s refined and romantic
ballet music and more in our own dancing fantasy.

"Albeniz
Adventure"
Easily mistaken for a super-hero, Albeniz lived a
vivid and vigorous life. Early development as a performer
led his father to exploit the 4 year olds skills on a highly
successful Spanish concert tour. The taste of travel and
approval fueled several independent forays before he settled
down to study in earnest. His lasting achievements lies in the
varied compositions he created in the style of his native land.
Albeniz is the first of the great Spanish national composers.

There is more than the notes to touch the ear. In these
selections the Trillium Piano Trio explores motivation,
reflection and reverie inspired by romance. Sometimes the
romance is a fantasy with passion and piquancy at its core,
other times it is a dream with pleasant images and warm
reminiscence.

"Tunesmiths' Promenade:
Berlin, Carmichael, Kern, and more....."
In the American popular song we can find a story of a
developing culture. Much of the humor, joy, fear and longing
come across in clever and poignant lyrics and well-crafted
tunes.
From the end of the 19th century the industry of
sheet music sales, vaudeville entertainments, Broadway shows,
record pressing and movie musicals were the product of hard
working and imaginative American music pioneers.
You’ll hear funny, poignant, patriotic and romantic tunes
that may help you refine your awareness of American life in the
early twentieth century.
